“I’m in trouble here”: Hughesy recalls disastrous surfing accident

Dave Hughes has recalled the details of a horrific surfing accident on New Year’s Eve, that resulted in him being rushed to hospital in excruciating pain.

Speaking candidly on his Hughesy, Ed & Erin radio show, the 53-year-old shared what happened on the Surfers Paradise beach as he was ringing in the New Year.

He told his co-hosts Erin Molan and Ed Kavalee that he was having surfing lessons when the disaster unfolded.

“It’s New Year’s Eve, I decide to go surfing and I crash on a huge wave,” Hughesy began.

“We’ve all got out big boards, and the problem is, the boards are too big.”

“So, and, I didn’t listen properly when the instructor said, ‘If you’re going to fall off your board, fall off backwards, don’t fall off forwards’.”

“And I didn’t really realise why, but I found out why.”
<blockquote class="instagram-media" style="background: #FFF; Why Dave Hughes didn't buy the final Block house

David ‘Hughesy’ Hughes was the surprise guest at this year's The Block auctions, and the Aussie comedian was keen on buying the final home to go on auction – Leah and Ash’s house.

Hughes was one move away from buying House 2 - which was passed in after it failed to hit reserve - but his wife blocked him from buying the home.

“I was accosted as I left the auction, trying to get out of there, because one house didn’t sell and I said, ‘I’ll go talk to my wife’,” Hughes said on KIIS FM’s Hughesy, Ed & Erin on Tuesday morning.

The radio host then called his wife Holly live-on-air so she could explain the reason why they did not buy House 2.

Holly revealed that she "was being asked by students and teachers,” about whether or not the couple bought the Block house.

“You [Hughes] came home and as we were getting into bed, you said, ‘How would you have felt if I just bought that house?’ And I said, ‘Furious’," Holly revealed.

She then called out her husband, claiming that he only wanted to buy the house to "show off".

“If you bought a third house [in Melbourne] without consulting with me …” she said.

“He never expressed any interesting in investing in that part of Melbourne, it’s so random, he would’ve just been buying a house to show off.

“He had not looked at the houses or anything. He hadn’t watched an episode.”

Although Hughes didn't get a property this season, his previous Block buy in 2017 was a huge success.

Image: Nine

Dave Hughes sets the record straight over famous Block house purchase

Dave Hughes has hit back at long-standing rumours that he grossly overpaid for his house in Melbourne at The Block auctions.

The radio host addressed the speculation on 2DAY FM’s Hughesy, Ed & Erin breakfast show, as his co-host Erin Molan queried him about how the investment property was performing.

In 2017, Hughesy bought the five-bedroom home in Elsternwick, built by contestants Josh and Elyse on Nine’s long-running reno show, for $3.067 million: a whopping $447,000 over the reserve.

Given the steep increase of the price, the purchase of the house led to a lot of talk that Dave Hughes had overspent.

Molan told her co-host on-air that a recent value estimate of the property that she’d found online put the home at $3.4 million.

Six years on from his purchase and with inflation, stamp duty and other factors weighted, Hughes noted that that $300,000-odd increase in value would actually put him at a loss.

However, Hughes said he had recently had the house valued himself, and the news was much better: He was told it is currently worth around $5 million.

After the purchase of the house, even Hughes himself conceded that he may have spent much more than what the house was worth.

In an interview with Stellar magazine in February 2018, he said that the bank had valued the property at “much less” than he paid.

“I went to get a bank loan the other day and they haven’t valued it the same as I paid for it, which is fine, but annoying because there were five bidders,” he said.

He said it was “enough less that it made me annoyed”.

“For f**k’s sake … I just think it’s good value and in a few years’ time people are going to be going, ‘Well, f**k, didn’t he do well with it!’ I am playing the long game, all right? That is what I say to my wife, anyway.”

In September of 2018, he told his then-co-host Kate Langbroek that he’d “copped so much flak” over the purchase.

He said, “It was ridiculous and it’s gone on and on and on. A lot of experts weighed into my purchase … There are articles that have been written all year having a go at me. One article from one mob called Property One or something, they had a dinner party discussion about how I paid too much.”

“She’s still with us, but it won’t be long": Hughesy's heartbreaking family news

Dave 'Hughesy' Hughes has held back tears as he shared the heartbreaking details of his mum's health battle live on his radio show.

Speaking candidly on 2Day FM’s Hughesy, Ed & Erin, Hughesy shared that it had been a "tough few weeks" for his family as his mum, Carmel, was nearing the end of her life.

“My mum’s unwell, and the family have gathered around her, and we’re celebrating her life,” Hughesy told co-hosts Erin Molan and Ed Kavalee.

“She’s still with us, but it won’t be long. She’s a beautiful woman who’s been a great matriarch of the family, and we’re all around her at the moment.”

While holding back tears, Hughesy then revealed that “she’s asleep now and she probably won’t wake up again”.

He explained the family had been “going through photos” recently in celebration of Carmel’s life.

“Mum grew up in an orphanage, and there’s a photo of her teaching a class with nuns looking over her … She had to leave the orphanage because she didn’t want to be a teacher, so she left with nothing and went and became a nurse, and met Dad.”

Reflecting on his mother’s legacy during the segment on Friday, Hughesy told his co-hosts: “She’s been a beautiful mother, who really supports her children.”

He went on: “Everyone goes through [losing their parents] … but the memories of all the sacrifice, and all the good times … She’s done so well in her life. We’ll miss her a lot.

“She’s always been stoic and never complained.”

Despite the difficult time Hughesy and his family are going through, the comedian was still able to smile and laugh as he reflected on his mum's sense of humour that she has kept "until the end".

“We were around and didn’t think she could even speak again, and one of the nurses was lifting her and said, ‘I’m sorry if I drop you’, and Mum just whispered, ‘it doesn't matter now’, and made the nurse laugh.”

“So she was still coming out with zingers … she’s a beautiful woman.”

Dave Hughes spills on worst celebrity interview

Dave Hughes is the latest media personality to open up about his worst celebrity interview.

The 2Day FM breakfast host named and shamed the singer in an interview with news.com.au’s Shock Jocks, where radio hosts have to answer tough questions or be "electrocuted".

“Avril Lavigne was a shocker,” he said, referring to the pop-punk sensation, who peaked during the early 2000s.

“She had a bad attitude, it was back around Sk8er Boi when she was at the height of her fame,” he added.

“She wouldn’t look at any of us. I’m not saying I’m the most attractive person in the world, but you can just look at me once.”

Hughesy's confession comes just over a week after Chrissie Swan revealed that former AFL legend Sam Newman was the worst interview of her career.

“It was terrible,” Swan said about Newman on Nova last week, “it was a terrible, terrible situation and so unusual in my career to feel so attacked.”

The interview was so bad that Swan had to walk out, and the interview itself never aired.

Newman hit back in response to Swan's comments and said: “What a coward to ask someone to come in, then walk out of the studio about an opinion over a topic we were talking about.

“I just gave my opinion and she walked out, how unprofessional. What a coward."

Image: Getty

Dave Hughes mugged by "big man" on Melbourne street

Comedian Dave 'Hughesy' Hughes has shared an incident on air about a harrowing encounter he had while grabbing dinner in Melbourne for his family on a Tuesday night.

The 52-year-old radio host recounted the incident during his appearance on 2DAY FM’s morning show, "Hughesy, Ed & Erin", with fellow comedian and stand-in host, Kate Langbroek.

Hughes explained that he had ridden his electric bike to a nearby takeaway restaurant close to his residence to order dinner for his family.

Unfortunately, upon his arrival, he discovered that the restaurant he had in mind was closed. Frustrated by the situation, he took out his phone with the intention of calling his wife to discuss alternative dinner plans when, suddenly, his phone was snatched from his hand.

While recalling the incident, Hughes expressed how startled he was, saying, "I’m on the bike, and I put my phone up to my ear, and then all of a sudden, someone grabs my phone out of my hand, just grabbed it, yes, stole my phone."

He went on to describe the thief as a "big man" who appeared to be under the influence of drugs, suspecting him to be a "meth head": “I look and it’s a man, a big man, and he is off his nut. I’m gonna say he’s a meth head, you know what I'm talking about.”

The assailant's erratic behaviour didn't end with the phone theft. Hughes continued, "He tries to talk into the phone and he goes, ‘You weren’t even talking to anyone.’ Like it was my fault, like I was pretending to make a phone call."

Rather than pursuing the thief on his bike, Hughes resorted to shouting, "Give me my phone back!"

The situation eventually deescalated as the man threw the phone to the ground and stumbled away, eventually confronting a nearby vehicle. "He just staggered off and basically attacked a car,” said Hughes.

Langbroek criticised Hughes for not immediately contacting the police after the unsettling incident, expressing concern about tolerating such dysfunction in society. “I know that we’re all like, that’s sort of how it rolls," she said, "but when you start accepting dysfunction like that, then dysfunction will rule.”

Hughes, who had lost his driver's license the previous month due to a series of minor traffic violations that resulted in the loss of his accumulated points, had been relying on his electric bike for transportation.

Image: 2DAY FM

Manu Feildel and Kyle Sandilands pop off in tense exchange

Kyle Sandilands and Manu Feildel went head-to-head in a tense exchange about new My Kitchen Rules judge, Nigella Lawson.

The shock jock questioned Manu as to why Nigella wouldn’t agree to doing an interview with him and help promote the show.

“What’s her problem? Apparently I hear, correct me if I’m wrong producers, the network is upset because Nigella’s said ‘no way, you’re not going on that filthy show’. Our show. How does that happen?” Kyle asked.

A confused Manu was shocked to hear the claims and told Kyle he was not sure as to why Nigella would not agree to an interview, explaining this is the first time he’s heard of it.

“I have no idea, that’s news to me buddy. I will make sure she talks to you next time,” he responded.

But that was not a good enough excuse for Kyle who continued his rampage against the wrong person.

“How am I meant to support you when the woman besides you loathes the thought of me?” he asked.

“I think she’s amazing, she’s the queen but when you find out someone doesn’t like you, you can’t help but not like someone back.”

Manu’s voice changed and he made it clear that he was uncomfortable about the subject, requesting that they speak about My Kitchen Rules.

“I think you’re just being upset for no reason. Let’s not get upset guys.”

“I think he’s embarrassed that his co-worker let him down,” Kyle told Jackie O.

Jackie O did not want anything to do with the conversation and said “maybe he [Manu] was sick of talking about it [Nigella]”.

“Who gives a s**t what he's sick and tired of talking about!” Kyle shot back.

“I like Manu, I like the show, he can come on but I am very shocked about the Nigella thing. That’s a real slap to the face.”

Kyle then asked Manu to “sort out” Nigella’s management before the conversation slowly ended.

My Kitchen Rules airs on Channel 7 on Sunday August 7 at 7pm.

Images: Instagram

Review: The Drover’s Wife: the Legend of Molly Johnson

Review: The Drover’s Wife: the Legend of Molly Johnson, written and directed by Leah Purcell, Sydney Film Festival

Leah Purcell’s The Drover’s Wife: the Legend of Molly Johnson is an inspired and compelling re-imagining of Henry Lawson’s The Drover’s Wife, a short story originally published in The Bulletin in 1892.

Purcell’s debut feature film as writer and director, filmed in late 2019, has emerged out of a lifelong connection with this story. Citing three generations of drovers in her own family, Purcell explained in a recent interview how, as a five-year-old girl, she would implore her mother to read Lawson’s story to her. For Purcell, it was, “the first time I used my imagination and saw myself in a story”.

As her mother recited, Purcell would imagine a “little film in my head”. In it, she was the little boy in the story and her mother the drover’s wife.

Purcell has been repeatedly drawn to The Drover’s Wife as a way of placing her Indigenous family’s story before a broad Australian audience. The film expands on the acclaimed stage play she wrote and starred in, which premiered at Belvoir Street Theatre in 2016 and won the Victorian prize for literature, two NSW premier’s literary awards and four Helpmann awards. She also adapted the play into a novel, released in 2019.

In all three versions of the story, set in 1893 in the Snowy Mountains in NSW, Purcell gives voice to Indigenous experiences of the frontier that were maligned and marginalised in Lawson’s version.

As in the play, the film is carried by its Indigenous co-stars. Purcell plays the drover’s wife, Molly Johnson, unearthing an Indigenous heritage for the character. Johnson is burdened by a dark secret and Purcell imbues the role with a determined strength, her posture and gaze expressing fortitude, grit and constant vigilance, whether she is carrying her broom or her rifle.

Rob Collins plays Yadaka, a character inspired by Purcell’s great-grandfather, Tippo Charlie Chambers, a caring and gentle man who spent time as a travelling circus performer in the 1890s while yearning for his Country.

Yadaka (Rob Collins), left, is central to this reworked story. Bunya Productions, Oombarra Productions

Yadaka is central to Purcell’s reworking of the original story, fleshed out from the brief mention of a “stray blackfellow” who chops some wood for the drover’s wife in Lawson’s version.

In the film, the fugitive Yadaka arrives at the heavily pregnant Molly’s isolated property and ultimately saves her life when her labour goes wrong, helping her to bury her stillborn child. But Yadaka is a wanted man, blamed for the murder of a white family in town. This sets off an unfortunate chain of events.

Yadaka also unlocks Molly’s understanding of her Indigenous family, paving the way for her children to escape from becoming wards of the state. The strong bond the drover’s wife has with her children in Lawson’s original story is deepened in Purcell’s film. Molly is driven to protect her children from the authorities and to overcome violence and hardship.

Molly’s eldest son Danny – played by Malachi Dower-Roberts, who Purcell joyfully describes as a “red-haired freckled Blackfella from Glebe” – functions as a figure of hope in the film.

He forms a bond with Yadaka, taking responsibility for guiding his siblings to safety. The absence of the drover himself, Jo Johnson, meanwhile, is attributed to his being a violent drunk and an abuser, rather than the heroic, pioneering figure imagined by Lawson.

Molly Johnson is driven to protect her children. Bunya Productions, Oombarra Productions

The film was shot in and around Adaminaby. Cinematographer Mark Wareham captures the beauty and harshness of the rolling hills and valleys of this vast, alpine landscape, from dusty clearings to lush greenery and stark, white snow.

Foreboding, enveloping mists are rendered by the time-lapse photography of Murray Fredericks. The beauty and menace of this landscape frame the film’s harrowing violence. The final closeup shots are especially chilling.

Violent realities

Purcell’s is not, of course, the first re-imagining of Lawson’s story. In 2017, Frank Moorhouse brought together a collection of its numerous literary reworkings in The Drover’s Wife: A Celebration of a Great Love Affair, including the writer and director’s notes from Purcell’s original play.

But Purcell’s cinematic version of the story exemplifies what Felicity Collins and Therese Davis describe in their book Australian Cinema After Mabo as a process of “cinematic backtracking”. Familiar figures and archetypes are revived and reworked, opening up new meanings and interpretations.

In recent years, we have witnessed a surge of interest in the archetypes, themes and aesthetics of the Western in Australian cinema with films like The Proposition (John Hillcoat, 2005), Sweet Country (Warwick Thornton, 2017), The Nightingale (Jennifer Kent, 2018) and High Ground (Stephen Johnson, 2020). All suggest a growing reckoning with the violent realities of our frontier history.

Purcell’s film is part of this turn.

By bringing her personal history and identity as a Black woman to bear on the Australian Western, Purcell has enriched this burgeoning film cycle.

The way that Purcell’s Molly Johnson endures in this film is both inspiring and heartbreaking. This is a subversive survival story that brings an unflinching new perspective to Australian cinema’s ongoing engagement with the frontier.

The Drover’s Wife will be in cinemas May 2022.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag.
